Schwoby's RDR2 Strategy Guide

Travel Methods

RDR2 offers a variety of ways to get around; including foot, horse, train, and stagecoach.

Train

There are two entirely separate train systems available. The one in the North runs though New Hanover, Lemoyne, Ambarino, and West Elizabeth while the other is in the South and exclusive to New Austin. The Southern system only offers cargo transfer, so you cannot purchase any train tickets for the various stops along the track. The Northern system offers seven different passenger stops, all of which are available at the beginning of chapter 2. Highjacking a train is a great way to discover the countryside and can be utalized for both train systems. NOTE: if you are stuck in a loop, try going backwards through an intersection. Just make sure the back of the train is fully out of the intersection first. The following is a list of all the train stops availabe to you.

Stagecoach

The stagecoach offers up to 11 different destinations, but you must have first uncovered the destination in order for it to become available. This means that if you want to use the Stagecoach to get to Rhodes from Valentine, you must have first visited Rhodes. Seven of destinations are available before the Epilogue, but the following is the full list.

Horse

The most common and versatile method of travel is via horseback, and any action you take with your horse will affect your bonding level with it, until you have reached level four. Manually controlling your horse is the default method, but you can also activate Autorun. Autorun can be activated by marking a destination on the map and then while on your horse hold down the Touchpad [PlayStation], View-Button [Xbox], or 'V' key [PC]. Once Cinematic View has fully engaged, your horse will continue to travel along the route to your marked destination. Although you no longer need to activly control the horse in this mode, you can still be attacked and your horse can still be spooked, so caution should be taken. Autorun unlocks during the mission ‘Enter and Pursued by a Memory’ during the first chapter.

Fast Travel

The last method of travel is Fast Travel, which must be unlocked via the Camp Ledger. Completing the mission ‘Money Lending and Other Sins’ from Strauss will unlock the Camp Ledger, then upgrade both ‘First Things First’ and then ‘Next In Line’. This is a $545 upgrade, but you can find some gold bars to help out with this. When activating Fast Travel, even if you don’t start out on your horse you will arrive on your horse. Although the animations used for the Train, Stagecoach and Fast Travel are basically the same, Fast Travel varies from the other two methods in that its free to use and you can start your travels from anywhere on the map. If you are wanting to fast travel from your camp, then head to your sleeping area to find the Fast Travel map. Additionally, the destinations available to you will change over time as you progress though the story. Using Fast Travel, the train, and the stagecoach will act like a teleport and you just show up at your destination; you are immune to random events during the travel itself. NOTE: Like the Stagecoach, you must first visit the destination in order to unlock the ability to Fast Travel to it.
